The Tiffany & Co. Foundation is proud to join an esteemed group of marine conservation funders as a partner in the Pew Environment Group's Global Ocean Legacy project. In May 2012, the Board of The Tiffany & Co. Foundation approved a grant in the amount of $2,500,000 over five years to support the Global Ocean Legacy project.

Started in 2006, Global Ocean Legacy aims to establish 15 large no-take marine reserves by 2022. These will be highly protected expanses of ocean where fishing and other extractive activities are prohibited. As industries explore new frontiers for possible resource extraction, ocean reserves will become ever more difficult to delineate over time, making this project an essential and timely contribution to global ocean stewardship.

"As industrial society expands into every remote corner of the world, now is the time to protect these last remaining healthy ecosystems," says Jay Nelson, Director of the Global Ocean Legacy project. "Tomorrow may be too late."

The Tiffany & Co. Foundation values healthy oceans and has a long history of working to protect precious coral and marine ecosystems. The Foundation supports organizations that directly contribute to ensuring ocean health through marine ecosystem management and preservation, such as Pew's Global Ocean Legacy project. Global Ocean Legacy has already successfully designated three reserves, effectively tripling the area of highly protected ocean in the world, and continues to work to protect these key ecosystems.
